Tea production in India has fell by 6.18 per cent to 127.12 million kilograms in November 2023 compared to the same month the year ago at 135.49 million kgs., according to Tea Board data.
Production volume in North India, mostly Assam and West Bengal, was 106.23 million kgs (mkgs), down from 114.18 mkgs in the same time the previous year.
South India’s output in November 2023 was 20.89 mkgs, down from 21.31 mkgs in the same month in 2022.
Continuing the pattern, small farmers produced more than organised gardens in the month under review
According to Tea Board data, small farmers produced 67.50 mkgs in November 2023.
To maintain the quality of the plants, the Tea Board issued notices prohibiting plucking during the winter months.
The last day for picking green leaves on Darjeeling tea farms and gardens at higher elevations was December 11, 2023. The date for the Dooars and Terai areas of North Bengal was December 23.
