McDonald's Malaysia Sues Israel Boycott Movement, Seeks $1.3 Mn

McDonald’s Malaysia has taken legal action against a movement advocating the boycott of Israel, asserting that the group’s “false and defamatory statements” have adversely impacted its business.

The lawsuit, filed by Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd (GAR), the licensee of McDonald’s in Malaysia, seeks damages totaling 6 million ringgit (USD 1.31 million).

Malaysia, being a predominantly Muslim country, has been a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, leading to campaigns targeting certain Western fast-food brands due to their perceived association with Israel’s actions in Gaza.

GAR alleges that the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Malaysia movement made damaging social media posts linking McDonald’s, among other companies, to Israel’s military actions against Palestinians. The writ of summons, dated 19 Decemeber, claims that BDS Malaysia urged the public to boycott McDonald’s Malaysia, resulting in financial losses, job cuts, and operational disruptions such as closures and reduced operating hours.

In response, McDonald’s Malaysia has confirmed its legal action, stating that it aims to protect its “rights and interests.” BDS Malaysia, on the other hand, has denied the defamation allegations and expressed its intention to address the matter in court.

The BDS movement seeks to end global support for Israel and advocates for compliance with international law in addressing the alleged oppression of Palestinians.
