The ecommerce major will add 50 new delivery driver rest facilities by May-end as part of its broader Rs 2,800 crore investment in worker safety and wellbeing initiatives
Amazon India on Thursday said it plans to expand its network of ‘Ashray’ rest centres for delivery drivers to 250 facilities by the end of 2026, as part of a broader push to strengthen worker welfare and safety infrastructure across its operations network.
The company currently operates 100 Ashray centres across 16 cities, including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. Amazon said 50 additional centres are expected to become operational by the end of May this year.
The Ashray centres are designed as dedicated rest stops for delivery personnel, including drivers outside Amazon’s own delivery network. The facilities offer air-conditioned seating, drinking water, electrolytes, charging points, clean washrooms, first-aid kits and resting spaces, particularly aimed at supporting delivery workers during peak summer conditions, company said in issued statement.
According to the company, the existing network recorded more than one million visits from delivery drivers across the industry in 2025, highlighting rising demand for accessible rest infrastructure for gig and logistics workers.
In addition to fixed centres, Amazon India has introduced mobile Ashray units in the form of air-conditioned vans positioned along high-traffic delivery routes. These units provide amenities such as seating, hydration support, Wi-Fi and charging facilities, allowing delivery drivers to access rest points without deviating from delivery routes.
Salim R Memon said the initiative forms part of the company’s larger focus on associate health and safety. “The health, safety, and wellbeing of associates across our operations network is the topmost priority for us. Ashray was built on a simple idea — that every delivery driver, whether they deliver for Amazon or not, deserves a clean, cool place to rest during their workday,” he said.
“Scaling to 250 centres and taking these facilities directly to delivery drivers through our mobile units is a reflection of that commitment. This is also part of our broader investment of over Rs 2,800 crore to strengthen associate safety, health, and wellbeing across our operations network,” Memon added.
Amazon said it is partnering with organisations including Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Udyasa Foundation and READ India to establish the new centres.
