GJC Urges Gujarat Govt To Form Vigilance Panel For Jewellers

The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council seeks a state-level committee to protect jewellers from harassment and streamline compliance through SOPs

The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) has requested the Gujarat government to establish a state-level vigilance committee to protect jewellers from harassment and compliance pressures.

A high-level GJC delegation, led by chairman Rajesh Rokde and including vice chairman Avinash Gupta, met Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi in Gandhinagar to discuss challenges faced by jewellers and submit a proposal.

The proposal calls for the creation of a Gujarat State Level Vigilance Committee, with involvement of local jewellers to ensure transparency and fair representation, and the joint preparation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with government authorities.

“The establishment of a Gujarat state vigilance committee will be a landmark step in ensuring that jewellers can operate without fear of harassment, while maintaining compliance and transparency. Alongside the state committee, the GJC will also form district and city-level committees to provide grassroots support and ensure jewellers’ concerns are addressed swiftly”, said Rokde.

He added, “Jewellers across Gujarat have long voiced concerns about unnecessary harassment, raids, and compliance pressures from certain enforcement agencies and local authorities. While we fully support transparency and lawful practices, the absence of clear SOPs often leaves jewellers vulnerable to misinterpretation and exploitation. This is why we have demanded the formation of vigilance committees — to act as a bridge between jewellers and the government, ensuring that genuine traders are protected, while malpractice is curbed.”

Avinash Gupta, Vice Chairman of GJC, said, “This initiative will create a structured mechanism where jewellers and authorities work hand-in-hand to prepare SOPs and resolve issues collaboratively. By involving local jewellers at every level—state, district, and city—we can ensure fairness, accountability, and a strong support system across Gujarat.”

Rokde highlighted similar measures in Maharashtra, noting that SOPs there were introduced to safeguard the jewellery business and protect traders from arbitrary actions.

The GJC said the initiative aims to create a transparent framework for collaboration between jewellers and authorities, helping to resolve industry challenges efficiently while protecting legitimate businesses.
