Uber Expands Into Hotel Bookings, Partners Expedia To Build ‘Everything App’

Ride-hailing major integrates hotel reservations, dining, and travel services as it pushes toward a unified consumer platform

Uber has moved deeper into the travel ecosystem, enabling users to book hotel rooms directly through its app as part of a broader push to become an “everything app” catering to multiple daily needs.

The company said it is leveraging inventory from Expedia Group, giving users access to over 700,000 hotels and properties worldwide. It will also add more than one million vacation rentals from Vrbo later this year, expanding its accommodation offerings significantly.

Sachin Kansal, Uber’s Chief Product Officer, said the move addresses growing consumer fatigue from juggling multiple apps for travel planning. “Consumers are spending too much time coordinating their life, using multiple apps,” Kansal told The Associated Press, adding that Uber aims to simplify travel while helping users save time and money.

Hotel bookings will be available to all users, while Uber One subscribers, who pay USD 9.99 per month, will receive up to 20 per cent discounts on select hotels and 10 per cent back in Uber credits.

Uber has spent months integrating Expedia’s technology into its platform, though financial details of the partnership were not disclosed. Uber’s expansion reflects the growing convergence of mobility, travel, and lifestyle services as companies compete to build super apps that retain users within a single ecosystem.

Fixing Fragmented Travel
The development builds on Uber’s earlier diversification moves, including the launch of Uber Eats in 2015 and grocery delivery services in 2020. The company said travel already forms a significant part of its user activity, with more than 100 million people using Uber annually for airport trips and over 1.5 billion rides taking place outside users’ home cities last year.

Alongside hotel bookings, Uber is introducing additional travel-focused features. Users will soon be able to access restaurant recommendations, reserve tables via OpenTable, and explore local points of interest through an upgraded travel mode.

The company is also piloting a premium service allowing users to pre-order drinks or snacks that will be ready upon pickup in Uber Black rides. The offering is set to roll out in cities including Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

In a LinkedIn post, Ariane Gorin, CEO, Expedia Group, said travel planning remains fragmented, with users switching between multiple platforms. She added that the partnership aims to create a more connected, end-to-end experience by combining booking, stay, and mobility within a single ecosystem.

Uber Chief Executive Officer Dara Khosrowshahi said the strategy is designed to reduce what he described as “cognitive overload” among consumers navigating multiple digital platforms.

“Uber is becoming an app for everything—helping people go, get, and now travel all in one place,” Khosrowshahi said, adding that the goal is to help users spend less time managing logistics and more time on actual experiences.

The move also places Uber in closer competition with platforms like DoorDash, which has recently entered the restaurant reservation space, signalling intensifying competition in the broader lifestyle services market.
