BIS Cracks Down On Ecommerce Firms, Seizes Uncertified Goods In Andhra Pradesh: Reports

The seized consignment comprised over 25 categories of consumer products, which included electronics, LED bulbs, toys and table fans

In another crackdown on ecommerce firms, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has seized a large consignment of uncertified consumer products from major platforms like Flipkart, Ekart, and Meesho in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, as per media reports.

Aimed at curbing the sale of non-certified and unsafe products violating provisions of the Quality Controls Orders (QCOs), the bureau is conducting a nationwide enforcement campaign. The reports noted that the BIS Vijayawada branch conducted a raid on 14 July against three platforms.

The seized consignment comprised over 25 categories of consumer products, which included electronics, LED bulbs, toys and table fans. They violated section 17 of the BIS Act 2016. The reports emphasised that several ecommerce platforms are enabling the sale of uncertified and potentially hazardous products.

The reports added that these products were being sold in violation of mandatory QCOs and many provisions of the BIS Act. Section 17 of the BIS Act prohibits the sale, storage or display of goods without the standard mark, the reports added.

In an earlier development, highlighting that food safety is of paramount importance, G Kamala Vardhana Rao, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), told representatives of leading ecommerce platforms in a meeting that any non-compliance with food safety protocols will be viewed with utmost seriousness, potentially leading to severe action.

He directed all ecommerce entities to prominently display their FSSAI license, registration numbers on every receipt, invoice, and cash memo provided to consumers. They were also asked to display information regarding the Food Safety Connect app on all consumer-facing documents.
