Paul John’s AArambh Marks Rare Pre-Bottling Sell-Out

Limited to just 180 bottles, AArambh marks a collaboration between Paul John Whisky and Pune-based whisky community The Cask Circle

Paul John Indian Single Malt Whisky has introduced AArambh, an ultra-exclusive single cask expression created in collaboration with Pune-based whisky enthusiasts’ collective The Cask Circle, marking one of the rarest releases in the Indian whisky market.

Drawn from Single Cask #20523, the limited-edition release comprises just 180 bottles, all of which were reportedly claimed before the whisky was bottled. Bottled at 50 per cent ABV, AArambh has been crafted from an unpeated single malt distilled in November 2017 at John Distilleries’ Goa facility and matured in two ex-bourbon casks.

The release arrives amid rising interest in premium and collectible Indian whiskies, as enthusiasts increasingly seek unique expressions beyond mainstream labels and limited-edition marketing claims.

A Community-Led Selection
Positioned around the philosophy of “Chosen. Not Bought.”, AArambh was independently selected by members of The Cask Circle after nearly two years of evaluation and discussion. The whisky represents a growing trend towards community-led cask selections, where enthusiasts play a direct role in identifying and curating rare releases.

The single malt presents aromas of apple pie, vanilla, oak and orange blossom honey. On the palate, it offers notes of caramel pudding, cinnamon, sweet oak and vanilla, followed by a finish featuring tropical fruits, malt and milk chocolate.

Commenting on the release, Paul P. John, Chairman of Paul John Indian Single Malt Whisky, said the overwhelming demand reflected the maturity of India’s whisky collector community.

“AArambh is a word that carries a great deal of meaning for us. Every single cask release we have done has been a beginning of sorts, a new conversation, a new benchmark. But this one feels particularly significant. The fact that 180 bottles found their homes before we had even bottled the whisky tells us something profound about where Indian whisky has arrived,” he said.

“We are no longer just making whisky for the world to discover. We are making whisky that India is proud to collect.”

India’s Whisky Culture Matures

According to industry observers, India’s whisky appreciation culture has evolved significantly in recent years, with whisky clubs, tasting communities and collector groups gaining traction across both metropolitan and emerging cities.

Dushyant Bhatia, Founder of The Cask Circle, said the release was designed to showcase the growing sophistication of Indian whisky enthusiasts.

“We were not looking for whisky to sell. We were looking for a whisky that said something — about where Indian single malt has arrived, about what community-led appreciation can look like, and about the kind of whisky culture we want to build in India,” he said.

The success of AArambh underscores a broader shift in consumer behaviour, with enthusiasts increasingly valuing provenance, cask character and exclusivity over traditional brand-led narratives.

Strengthening India’s Premium Whisky Credentials

AArambh marks the eighth domestic single cask release from Paul John Whisky, whose single cask programme has steadily cultivated a dedicated community of collectors and connoisseurs. Each release has sold out, reflecting sustained demand for limited-production Indian single malts.

Produced by John Distilleries in Goa, Paul John Whisky has expanded its presence to 44 countries since 2012 and has accumulated more than 390 international awards. The company says its portfolio, crafted from Indian six-row barley and produced without added colouring or chill filtration, continues to play a role in elevating India’s standing in the global premium whisky segment.

The latest release highlights how India’s single malt category is increasingly moving beyond volume growth towards collectability, craftsmanship and enthusiast-driven experiences, signalling a new chapter for the country’s premium spirits industry.
